Innovative biphasic waveform technology
ForeRunner delivers its lifesaving energy in a biphasic waveform, the same proven and preferred method used in implantable defibrillators. Biphasic requires less energy than the traditional monophasic waveform to gain the same defibrillation effectiveness. The American Heart Association has determined that the low-energy SMART Biphasic waveform is "safe, acceptable, and clinically effective."* By using biphasic waveform, HP Heartstream can make ForeRunner smaller, lighter, less costly and more reliable.
Automatically optimized for each individual
No two individuals are built alike. Chest size, body shape, and body density are all factors that determine a patient’s chest impedance. Unfortunately, monophasic defibrillators don’t compensate for chest impedance when delivering a shock. Consequently, this "one-size-fits-all shock" can be too strong or too weak. With ForeRunner’s SMART Biphasic technology, chest impedance is instantly measured and waveform shape is automatically optimized for each patient with every shock.
No other AED uses the low-energy SMART Biphasic waveform technology to optimize the shape of the waveform for individuals of any size or weight.
Exceptionally smart technology means extremely low maintenance
HP Heartstream’s ForeRunner is ingeniously designed to be ready when an emergency strikes. Its long-life disposable lithium batteries are a fraction of the size and weight of all other batteries used in all other defibrillators. They’re also incredibly reliable with a five-year shelf life; similar in technology to those used in implantable defibrillators. And they never require recharging to keep ForeRunner at full standby power.
Automatic self-test ensures optimum performance
Once a battery pack is inserted, ForeRunner automatically initiates daily readiness checks. Circuitry, internal components, and battery capacity are self-monitored each day. Results are shown on the status indicator, so you can confirm readiness at a glance.
It’s easy to see (and hear) what makes the ForeRunner unique.
Because instant response is critical, Laerdal designed ForeRunner so users could understand and use it with minimal training.
The ForeRunner’s two defibrillation pads feature clear, concise illustrations for proper placement:
Step 1--turn it on
Step 2--view LCD screen for cues and follow the comprehensive voice prompts
Step 3--deliver the low-energy SMART Biphasic shock by pushing the indicated button
You never know when it’s going to happen.
Sudden cardiac arrest is the single leading cause of death worldwide. In America, less than one in twenty victims of sudden cardiac arrest survives for one primary reason: effective treatment doesn’t arrive in time. Dialing 9-1-1 is only part of the answer. With each precious minute that passes, survival rates decline 10%. The only effective remedy in the event of sudden cardiac arrest is defibrillation — delivering an electrical shock to the heart to get it functioning properly once again, and delivering this shock quickly.
Yet hundreds of thousands still die of sudden cardiac arrest unnecessarily each year. Why? Because traditional defibrillators are too cumbersome, too complicated, and too costly. In a word, they’re inaccessible.
HP Heartstream’s ForeRunner utilizes highly accurate computerized technology to automatically assess if a shock is appropriate. Users don’t have to be trained in interpreting an electrocardiogram. ForeRunner activates the shock button only when a life-threatening heart rhythm is identified.
